Two Clean & Simple Mixed Media Layouts

For today's post, I've created Two Mixed Media Layouts in the Clean and Simple Style. CAS Mixed Media is a difficult style to work in because it is the merging together of 2 very different ways of working. But the end result is often, very aesthetically pleasing. Since the focus is on the main element, the eye is drawn directly to it and one has to ensure a harmonious composition around the focal element. In all layouts, the photos are supposed to be the focal elements, so everything we add, whether it is the colours, textures, embellishments, papers etc, it is always keeping the photograph in mind. Over here, I tried to restrict the art work to a smaller space and ensured the presence of a large white space on both layouts. I've created a step-by-step pictorial for one of the layouts :) So let's get started!

1. Mixed Media Layout- Inspire 

Step-by-Step Photo Tutorial:

1. The base is a 30 by 30 cm piece of 300 gsm Watercolor Paper. To this, color was added using sprays and the ink smooshing technique (using a piece of acetate). This gives an artistic, organic look. (Tip: Dry each layer before adding more colors, this gives better control)

2. Did background stenciling with archival ink and Mudra's Doodle Cluster Stencil. (Tip: Place the photo on top to get an idea of where to add the stenciling, so some of it is visible even after the photo and mats are added later on)

3. Heat embossed Mudra's Chipzeb Chipboards (Fancy Flourish, Victorian Rectangle & Words #1) to get a shiny & dimensional look 

4. Prepared the photo mats by using papers (in coordinating colors as the photo) from Mudra's Beary Hugs Paper Pack, distressed their edges and darkened them with archival ink

5. Did background stamping using Mudra's Mini Stamps (Checker, Go Confident, Special Day, Old Script & Rustic Diamond) & shades of grey & black archival inks (Tip: Using lighter and darker shades of ink for background stamping creates more visual interest) 

6. Added ink splatter all around the composition using a thin tip brush and coordinating colors of ink (Tip: Varying the size of the ink splatter creates more visual interest)

7. Layered all the elements and adhered them using strong liquid glue. To add dimension to some of the elements, 3d foam tape was added. A foam flower was created using Mudra's Gardenia Dies. A bit of gauze was added under the flower for texture. And to add sparkle & shine, Mudra's Harvest Mix Couture Sequins were added with Glossy Accents.

8. To add more texture to the layout, mini and regular art stones were added mixed with Soft Matte Gel. (Tip: Use an old brush to mix and apply such gels since they dry very hard & end up ruining brushes). In the end, white ink splatter was created to tie the whole piece together.

2. Mixed Media Layout- Live 

Process:

1. On a piece of 30 by 30 cm watercolor paper, applied green texture paste (mixed light paste with pigment powders) through Mudra's Leafy Pattern Stencil & then added more colors using sprays.

2. Did background stamping with Mudra Stamps (Ferns & Leaves, Hexa, Floral Banner & Rustic Diamond) & archival inks

3. Created a photo mat using a paper (of coordinating color) from Mudra's Beary Hugs Paper Pack & distressed it's edges.

4. Created the composition, layered and adhered all the elements including Mudra's Chipzeb Chipboards (Mini Flowers, Words #1 & Spring Floral), some thread, twine & gauze. Used foam tape to add dimension to some of the elements. 

5. For added sparkle, adhered Mudra's Yellow & Radium Green Couture Sequins with glossy accents.

6. Created ink splatter all around the composition.
